Poverty and Place: A Review of the Science and Research That Have Impacted Our Work

Over the past ten years, Purpose Built Communities has helped local leaders launch 27 neighborhood revitalization projects across the country. They have an additional 50 projects in development. Given the nature of their work, Purpose Built considers it critical to stay as informed as possible regarding the science and research in fields that can inform the practice. Joseph Longbottom

Joseph (JoJo) Longbottom is an award-winning education leader who is currently pursuing his doctorate in Education Leadership (Ed.L.D.) from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He is currently serving in the role of Future of Learning Strategist for the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching focusing on redesigning K12 education systems to increase economic and social mobility for every student. Joseph is a systems-level leader and improvement specialist with expertise in organizational strategy, managing complex change, and leadership development for deeper learning. Joseph

Clare Suter

Clare is a third-year Harvard Ph.D. student in Economics, where she studies economic inequality and mobility using tools from labor and public economics. Prior to graduate school, she was a predoctoral fellow at Opportunity Insights from 2020-22, and received her BA in Public Policy with a minor in Statistics from the University of Chicago.

Samir Nathwani

Samir Nathwani is a nonprofit management intern at EdRedesign. He is a CPA and an accounting and finance instructor with the School of Management at Langara College in Vancouver, British Columbia. Before Langara College, Samir worked in several financial management roles in Canada, the United States and Brazil, primarily focused on the mineral resources and oil and gas industries and began his career with Ernst & Young in assurance and advisory business services. Yu Wen Wong

Yu Wen (she/they) is a summer research assistant at EdRedesign. They also serve as Dr Lynne Sacks' teaching fellow at the Harvard Graduate School of Education during the academic spring semester. Yu Wen has a B.A. in Political Science and Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania and a Master's in education from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Her research interests include group dynamics and postcolonial literary education.

This year’s institute included sessions on creating post-secondary pathways for young people, cradle-to-career work already being done in neighborhoods across the country, trends in upward mobility, the value of personalized learning plans for every child, and how to turn entrenched challenges into solutions.
