Collaborative Action in a Rural Setting: Insights from Resilient Southern Illinois

This case chronicles the early efforts of Resilient Southern Illinois (Resilient SI), an initiative of the statewide nonprofit Partnership for Resilience in IL. PfR brings together school leaders, teachers, students, families, and health care providers to coordinate strong systems of support for children affected by trauma. Through interviews with local leaders, the case distills several key lessons that can help inform other rural collaborative efforts seeking to build on existing assets in order to bolster children's wellbeing. One of the main goals of the Somerville Children's Cabinet was to expand out-of-school time to address the city's growing opportunity gap. The city's partnership with Breakthrough Greater Boston focused on providing intensive summer instruction, afterschool programs, and college guidance to middle and high school students.
