‘Breakthrough is the place I can be myself’: Connecting Somerville Youth to Out-of-School Opportunities
This case study spotlights Breakthrough Greater Boston's ongoing collaboration with the Somerville Children's Cabinet in Massachusetts to narrow the opportunity gap by improving access to quality afterschool and summer learning. Through the program, middle and high school students participate in tutoring, mentoring, internships, and workshops to help them apply to and thrive in college. Several elements have contributed to Breakthrough's success, including its "near peer" teacher model, embedded college focus, community building, and family support and investment.
