FLINT, Mich. (WJRT) - Flint's Center for Educational Excellence has joined Harvard's success planning network to foster a personalized learning approach.

The collaboration with EdRedesign, part of the Harvard Graduate School, aims to enhance individualized, relationship-based learning. This initiative connects Flint with 16 other communities nationwide, all focused on similar educational styles.

Tauheedah Jackson, the deputy director of EdRedesign at Harvard Graduate School, explained Flint's selection.

"We had also been familiar with the work they have been doing in the community school space and some of the other work they have been doing across the community," Jackson said.

Jackson emphasized that communities are chosen based on their dedication to expanding opportunities for children and their strong collaboration with local organizations.

"When we talked about the things that Flint is already building on, they have a lot of the building blocks in place with the broader cross sector work they have been doing," Jackson said.

Keiona Mosley, the chief strategy officer at the Flint Center for Educational Excellence, highlighted the importance of the strategy for Flint.

"We know from data that over 70% of Flint children are chronically absent, and that chronic absenteeism is impacting their academic outcomes," Mosley said.

The partnership will work to advance EdRedesign's Success Planning, a relationship-based approach connecting young people with personalized plans and resources. "Really focused on individualized relationship based support so, how can support young people to be seen and heard and connect them to caring adults," Mosley said.

Mosley also spoke about their role in the community. "We really are the leaders around providing community education and after school programs," Mosley said.

The Flint team is scheduled to meet with other communities at Harvard in mid-July to commence the planning process.
